Businesses take work and your network marketing business is no different. If you aren’t ready to work harder than you’ve ever worked before, network marketing may not be the right fit for you. My own mlm mentor is fond of saying, “Don’t promise them anything but hard work”.

The only way that the owner will ever be able to stop working in the business and enjoy the residual income of his creation is with a replicable business system.

Time has value. In many ways time has more value that money because time cannot be replenished or transferred, but I’ll spare you the philosophical musings. Network marketing lead generation takes time or money or both. It is never free.

The reason this headline shows up so often is that there are network marketing lead generation methods where you invest your time now in order to have free lead flow in the future. Among these methods SEO is generally the first free network marketing lead generation method on the list. Let me tell you from personal experience that is does work, but the investment to learn SEO and automated the many repetitive tasks is far, far from free.

Network Marketing Lead Generation is Better than Buying Leads

Some marketers skip the lead generation step and buy mlm leads from network marketing lead generation companies. It is a fast way to get yourself on the phone or in front of live prospects today. A Drop Card is nothing more than a bit of paper that you purposefully ‘drop’ or leave behind you. Typically these are the size and shape of a business cards or they are printed to look like a $100 bill on one side. The idea is uncomplicated. “Drop these Cards” everywhere people gather. Let numbers work for you. People will pick up your card, read it, keep it and respond if they are curious. Or, people will pick up your card, read it and put it back where they found it.

If you saw a $10, $20 or $100 bill lying on the ground I’m sure you would pick it up, right? Flip it over and there is an intriguing statement such as “Fire Your Boss. #1 Home-Based Business” or “Need More Leads? Need More Reps?” or “If You Want to Work for the Rest of Your Life, That’s Your Business; If You Don’t That’s My Business.” In addition to your catch phrase, the only other thing on your Drop Card should be a Website URL.The video is an invitation to find out more; it is not the time to reveal details of your network marketing bsuiness.

Not many cards are thrown away. The hundred dollar bill cards are very viral; one person finds it and shows a friend who shows another friend. The viral use of these bills basically will get your network marketing business in front of many more would-be customers and prospects. Responses are just a matter of time if you are putting the cards out consistently. Curiosity first; eyeballs second.This is a strategy that the newest, most timid member of your team can implement.

What should be on your website? A video; fewer than 200 words of text and a capture form asking for a name, email and phone number. In the video, thank the person for taking the time to visit your site. Reassure them that you are a real person and have useful information to share. Explain that providing contact information separates the ‘curious’ from the ‘serious’ and that you only spend time with the ‘serious’. Be yourself and be brief. Drop cards work, they always have, and they always will because they appeal to the basic human curiosity factor in all of us. If you are not currently using drop cards in your regular routine add this method today.

Problem #1: Short words only

The keywords returned by the Google External Keyword tool and other paid tools like Market Samurai are often only 2 or 3 words in length. If you type in “MLM leads” ( a two word phrase) you will get back other two and three word phrases. That is somewhat expected. But, when you type in a longer phrase like prequalified MLM leads in the UK (a 6 word phrase) you still get back 2 and 3 word phrases. All of these tools are no good at discovering longtail keywords. Two or three words is the most you are going to get.

Problem #2: No location specific words returned

Consider the example of “prequalified MLM leads in the UK” or any other search containing a location like “work from home in Oregon” or “earn online income in Denver”. It would be nice if the keyword tools would return words that used the same city, state or country that you used in your query. For any of you that have ever tried it you know already that this doesn’t happen. The location qualifier is largely dropped or ignored. That makes it hard to develop a list of MLM keywords to target a specific region.

Problem #3: No company specific terms returned

Given how smart the Google search engine is, you would expect that if you type the name of an MLM company or the name of one of its products, that it would return the names of other products from the same company. But, if you type in “monavie active” (one of the juice types) the search engine does NOT return “monavie mmun”, “monavie pulse” or “monavie emv” (the names of three other products). That means you have to manually compile lists of products and companies.

Problem #4: No leader names returned

One great way of attracting online MLM traffic is the use of leader names in articles and ads. Every company has its short list of top income earners. Wouldn’t it be great if the free keyword search tools could spit out the names of all the diamonds in Amway? We all know that it can’t. That forces online network marketers to hunt for names one-by-one – a laborious and time-consuming process.

Number one – Do not spam. Always send your messages only to people who have opted-into the list and make it clear how to unsubscribe. So where does that leave the brand new person with no opt-in list to send to?

Fortunately there are several existing lists with tens of thousands of subscribers that you can start emailing (with permission) as early as today. Three of these are found at ListJoe.com, ViralHosts.com and ViralURL.com. The rest of this article gives you an introduction to what to expect and how to maximize your return from these services.

First, set up a SEPARATE, email account to use with either Viral URL, Viral Hosts or List Joe. In order to send email to their lists of tens of thousands of subscribers, you have to agree to receive about 30-50 emails per day yourself. You don’t want all these messages mixed with your personal mail. The email you set up can be a free email from Gmail or an email account associated with your domain name. For example, if your main email address is andreakropp @ thisismydomain.com then you could set up andrea.kropp@thisismydomain or andrea-kropp @ thisismydomain.com. Take the 10 minutes to set up a separate email address or you will hate yourself later.

ListJoe, Viral Hosts and Viral URL are free to use, but you’ll get the best return on your time if you accept the one-time offer to upgrade your account. As a free member you have to click on other people’s emails to earn credits to be able to send your own message. Clicking on other people’s messages is a great way to study ad copy and capture pages, but you don’t want to be forced to do it. The upgrade offer was $97 per year when I did it. It is only presented to you at this price once, so decide from this post whether you intend to do it or not. With an upgraded membership you can send 3,000 emails every 3 days and you don’t have to read anybody else’s. (Again, I encourage you to study the ad copy and landing pages among what you receive, but who wants to spend half a day clicking for credits?)

Built into the systems are analytic packages that allow you to A/B test different messages. This is a great way to control for the time of day your message is sent. If you queue 3000 messages you can split those 1500/1500. When you come back a few days later the system will report how many opens each of your versions had so you can determine which is better. You should only test one of three things at a time – subject, body and link URL. The science of A/B testing is a whole series of posts itself.

Another nice feature is that the system will save your past messages. If you write a winner you can simply log in every three days and send that winner over and over with about 10 minutes of effort. They’ll even send you a reminder message when it’s time to email again.

It is important to understand that the open rates for Viral URL, Viral Hosts and List Joe are higher than traditional email marketing because of the incentive to earn credits. These companies correctly advertise high delivery rates and high click-through rates (CTR). You just need to understand that many people are clicking on the link in your message just to get credits for themselves. For this reason having a video that starts playing automatically is probably the best way to capture the attention of someone who was just clicking for credits.

Depending on the quality of your email copy and the quality of your landing pages you can expect about 2 to 5 opt-ins per 3000 emails sent. (This is based on my personal experience so I encourage you to try to do better!) At an average of 3 people per mailing every 3 days across the year that amounts to 3* 365/3 = 365 leads. The $97 dollars is well worth it when you can generate leads at 97/365 = 27 cents each. No pay-per-click campaign will ever be that cheap. And, you’ll learn an awful lot about what ad copy and what capture pages are effective should you want to engage in pay-per-click later.

The most productive thing you can with your time is to reach out to other blogs. Send the publishers emails, comment on their postings (in a nice way) and try to start a dialogue with them. Trade links back and forth, offer to let them syndicate or “borrow” your content or postings, become a contributing or guest author, etc. Giving them information makes their jobs easier and you may find it generates significant traffic.

From the beginning, organize your blogs postings and content areas into a logical hierarchy. When you post, use your blog site’s tools to apply the appropriate keywords and themes so that your blog is searchable. Otherwise, you will have a mess that will turn off some of your followers.

If you follow the tips above, dedicate time to maintaining your blog, take the time to develop compelling posts, and consistently reach out through other third party blogging sites, then you will see a consistent flow of online network marketing leads generated by blogging. 2. Be careful what time of day you send out email. Don’t get into the habit of sending out email blasts when it is convenient for you. Create your messages and subject lines ahead of time and have them ready to go, so you can send them when your recipients are most likely to see and read them. I’d recommend sending them NOT before 9:00 a.m. and not after 7 p.m. Overnight, they’re just going to get buried behind other email and have less chance of being seen and read.

3. Email list management software. The market leaders are Aweber and GetResponse. These services allow you to create and grow unlimited different lists, send prewritten messages on a follow-up schedule to people by list and also send broadcast messages across lists. Both Aweber and GetResponse will report back to you how many people opened your email and how many clicked on any links embedded in the email. Your list is your lifeblood. You need a solution that provides solid reporting back to you so that you know what is and is not working. Also, ensure that you own the names on the list should you ever need to move to another provider.

4. Consider ready-made email marketing lists. These are pre-existing lists that allow you to send to their members. You are sharing this list with a lot of other people. But, this is a great way to get started while you build your own private list. There are a lot of software programs to choose from. And a lot that make false promises. Here are two that I have used that you may want to consider – ListJoe and ViralURL. Both have similar functions and both, most importantly, get you started right away with IMMEDIATE access to large, pre-existing subscriber lists. Both are free to try out but your best bet is their lowest level of paid account. The free versions require you to read others’ emails sent through the networks to get credits for usage, and it will take a lot of time for you to build up enough credits for you to make an impact. For about $15 a month you can email thousands of people every few days.

Set up a SEPARATE, free email account to use with these services. You’re going to get A LOT of email and you won’t want it clogging up your normal activities. Take the 10 minutes to set up a Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo account or you will hate yourself later. Both List Joe and Viral URL give you a great amount of of usage to operate within their respective networks. Both have spent significant money in developing built-in, powerful email marketing software that you simply can’t get as an individual home based business. In our experience, we recommend getting both programs, as they give you access to a larger universe of subscribers that are already opted in and used to receiving these types of offers.

First, do not make the mistake of directly advertising on a social marketing sight like Facebook or MySpace when people come there to socialize. People go to these sites for dating, relationships and networking, not reading about your opportunity!

Marketing that way reminds me of a time when my wife and I were dating. She did the funniest thing when we were wrestling around in the kitchen, and it only worked against her. 3. Put your links on your profile. Also make sure you post your links on walls and in groups in a socially acceptable way. This is a skill that is more times done incorrectly than correctly, but it is absolutely necessary if you are going to take the short cut and have an ample amount of opt-in leads.

You can create genuine relationships with the most targeted prospects on the front end and make opting in a quicker process. Many are waiting for their friends to discover that they are in a particular business instead. This is not necessary.

Several people have Facebook network marketing ideas for lead generation but have just approached it from the wrong perspective and are getting low results. For example, when I learned how to improve my article marketing skills I told my blog readers about it. Content is king, so there’s no need to use twitter to pitch people. You’ll get to allow your readers to sell themselves on what you’re doing by attracting them to your website later.

Here’s another quick tip. Twitter is great for building relationships, so remember to use it for good by sending positive replies to people you are following. The old adage of “help and be helped” goes on long way on twitter.
